Coaching vs therapy
Coaching vs therapy — and when to seek more
The honest version of a question a lot of people are quietly asking before they reach out. Here's the difference, in Eli's own words — and exactly where to go if coaching isn't what you need.
What's the difference between coaching and therapy?
Therapy typically focuses on processing the past and healing emotional wounds. Coaching is forward-focused — we work on where you are now and where you want to go. I help you build clarity, accountability, and action. If deeper therapeutic work is needed, I'll be upfront about that.
In plain terms: therapy looks back to heal; coaching looks forward to act. Both are valuable, and they are not the same work. According to the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, mental health conditions are common and treatable with the right professional care (SAMHSA National Helpline) — coaching does not replace that care.
| Aspect | Therapy | Coaching |
|---|---|---|
| Looks at | Processing the past and healing emotional wounds | Where you are now and where you want to go |
| Works on | Understanding and treating what has happened | Clarity, accountability, and action |
| Delivered by | A licensed mental health professional | A coach (Eli is not a licensed mental health professional) |
| Best when | You need to diagnose or treat a mental health condition | You're capable and want to move forward with support |
When should you see a licensed professional instead of a coach?
Coaching is the right fit when you're capable and want to move forward. It is not the right fit — licensed care is — when you're dealing with any of the following:
- Active thoughts of harming yourself or someone else
- A mental health condition that needs diagnosis or treatment
- Trauma or grief that needs healing, not forward planning
- Substance dependence, or a crisis happening right now
If that's where you are, it isn't a failure — it's important information. Eli will be upfront about it and help you find the right kind of help. Here is where to start:
- Florida Department of Health — verify a licensed provider (MQA) for confirming a Florida therapist, counselor, or clinical social worker is licensed.
- SAMHSA National Helpline — free, confidential, 24/7 treatment referral: call 988 or 1-800-662-HELP (4357).
- New York State Office of the Professions — license verification for clients working with Eli remotely from New York.
Eli's own referral process — who he refers to and how ‘I'll be upfront about that’ works in practice — should be confirmed and, ideally, named here before launch (coach-06).
EZ Coaching provides professional coaching. Coaching is not licensed mental health counseling, psychotherapy, clinical psychology, or social work, and does not involve the diagnosis, treatment, or amelioration of mental health disorders. If you require medical or clinical mental health treatment, please consult a licensed healthcare professional.
